Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 debuted with two Zombies maps, and now Season 1 is gearing up to introduce the new Citadelle des Morts DLC next month. This isn't just another map for Zombies in Black Ops 6; Citadelle des Morts marks a significant development in the ongoing Zombies narrative by merging previously unconnected Treyarch storylines. Here's a rundown of what to expect before the map drops on December 5.
The final cutscene for the Terminus map introduces several key names, which might be unfamiliar to those who haven't played Black Ops 4 or Vanguard Zombies. However, for long-time fans, these references tie together various story arcs in a compelling manner. Spoilers alert: The Terminus cinematics reveal that Edward Richtofen has been on a quest for Prima Materia and the Sentinel Artifacts, central to Treyarch's Chaos storyline.
In 2018, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 introduced a fresh set of Zombies characters for the Chaos storyline, which until now, had been separate from the Aether storyline featuring the original cast of Edward Richtofen, Takeo Masaki, Tank Dempsey, and Nikolai Belinsk. The Chaos characters in Black Ops 4 were on the hunt for Sentinel Artifacts, relics created from an Earth-mined substance called Prima Materia. This substance, revealed to be immensely powerful, corrupted and obliterated entire civilizations. It's no surprise that Richtofen seeks such power, but the consequences could be dire if he acquires a Sentinel Artifact. Additionally, it's hinted that a Sentinel Artifact might possess the energy needed to resurrect Samantha Maxis from the Dark Aether. Samantha Maxis sacrificed herself in the final cutscene of Black Ops Cold War Zombies to seal the Dark Aether breach and defeat the Forsaken.
Furthermore, the Terminus cutscene discloses that Richtofen enlisted a French syndicate to aid in his search for a Sentinel Artifact. Led by Franco Moreau, this syndicate includes Sergei Ravenov, who has kidnapped Gabriel Krafft to extract information about the artifacts. This segment of the cutscene introduces intriguing characters but also raises questions. Chronologically, Sergei Ravenov was last seen assisting the Terminus crew in thwarting Outbreak incursions in Black Ops Cold War. Gabriel Krafft, on the other hand, was a demonologist in Vanguard Zombies who studied these Sentinel Artifacts. Portrayed as an elderly man during World War II, it's fascinating to see how the story will explain his survival into 1991. Treyarch teases this in the trailer, referring to Krafft as 'the man who should not be alive.' Perhaps Krafft has resorted to using a relic for his own survival.
The enigma surrounding Krafft's survival and the pursuit of a Sentinel Artifact makes Season 1 of Black Ops an exhilarating time for Zombies fans. Players will now control the Terminus crew, who are on a mission to a European castle to rescue Vanguard's Gabriel Krafft from a perilous syndicate. Their goal is to locate Black Ops 4's Sentinel Artifact before it falls into Edward Richtofen's hands. The Terminus crew aims not only to thwart Richtofen but also to harness the artifact's power to bring back Samantha Maxis.
The first cinematic trailer for Citadelle des Morts is available here, showcasing the Terminus crew's escape from the prison island and their reunion with Sergei Ravenov. They urge him to betray the French syndicate, suggesting that Krafft might hold the key to resurrecting Samantha. More story and map details are expected to be revealed closer to the launch. Alongside Citadelle des Morts, the major Zombies update will feature Perk-a-Cola, a new field upgrade, a new ammo mod, and additional Augments to unlock. The map's main story quest will also go live with the launch.
