A new round-based multiplayer FPS, Blindfire, was unveiled during Xbox's latest Partner Preview. While multiplayer shooters are common, this game offers a distinctive twist: it takes place almost entirely in the dark. Blindfire is now available in early access through the Xbox Game Preview program on both Xbox Series X|S and PC. According to an Xbox Wire blog, the game emphasizes "slower, more tactical play." The multiplayer arenas are nearly enveloped in shadows, making noise and muzzle flashes from firing weapons a clear indicator of player positions. Players must strategize about when to engage the enemy.
For instance, players can choose between a quick, loud reload or a slower, quieter one. Matt Dunthorne, lead designer at developer Double Eleven, explained, "The beauty of the concept is its purity; it can be summarized in a single sentence: 'It's a pitch-black room, you have a gun, so do your enemies…good luck!'" The main game mode, Bodycount, is available in both free-for-all and team variants, spanning five rounds with one life per round. This setup creates a high-stakes game of cat-and-mouse, where players must navigate the shadows carefully.
Hiding in the dark won't guarantee victory; those who seek action by achieving multikills, headshots, or the first kill earn more points. Survivors who remain unscathed also receive rewards. Dunthorne noted, "Kills are less about shooting prowess and more about using environmental cues wisely. Moving cautiously, listening attentively, and considering potential threats are crucial." As matches progress, the arena's lights gradually turn on, mimicking the mechanics of an encroaching battle royale circle, pushing players towards the center and making them more visible.
Players aren't entirely in the dark; they can use an ability called Echo to briefly outline their surroundings. If Echo reveals an enemy, it shows their last known position, potentially making them a target. At launch, only two weapons are available: a powerful, accurate pistol and a close-range shotgun. Dunthorne stated that while new weapons will be added, the focus is on eliminating loadouts to ensure success depends more on strategy and execution than gear.
Other announcements from the Xbox Partner Preview include the reveal of Remedy Entertainment's first multiplayer game, FBC Firebreak, which will be available on Game Pass on day one alongside titles like Subnautica 2.
