BMW has initiated one of the most extensive recalls of 2024 to date, impacting 720,796 vehicles across various model lines. The issue at hand is a potential short circuit within the engine compartment that might lead to a fire. Interestingly, the short circuit could stem from the water pump.
According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, BMW received a report in January about a 'thermal event' involving an unspecified vehicle in the United States. This incident prompted an investigation that revealed other similar occurrences, leading to a detailed examination of the water pump and a particular electrical connector linked to it. It was discovered that under unusual conditions, 'blow-by fluid dripping from the intake air hose' could potentially reach the connector and compromise its seal. This could result in fluid infiltrating the connector, thereby causing a short circuit.
This issue has been identified in multiple vehicles. BMW has documented 18 cases where either complaints or actual damage were linked to this problem. Thankfully, the automaker has not reported any injuries or accidents related to the defective connector.
The recall, identified as NHTSA recall number 24V-608, covers a broad spectrum of BMW vehicles from 2012 to 2018. A detailed list of affected trims is provided.
The solution is relatively simple. BMW will conduct inspections of the water pump and the implicated connector, replacing them if any damage is detected. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to safeguard the connector from stray fluids.
Dealers have already been notified about the recall, and specific owner notifications will commence on October 4.
