If you're still in doubt about the size of contemporary vehicles, consider this: a BMW X3 equipped with 22-inch wheels straight from the factory. The recently unveiled M Performance Parts catalog for this luxury crossover features substantial alloy wheels that, truthfully, don't appear excessive. This is largely due to the fact that the latest X3 model is no longer compact, measuring 187.2 inches in length and 75.6 inches in width, making it actually larger than the first-generation X5. Despite the presence of M badges and a quad exhaust setup, this is not an X3 M; it's an M Performance model, now known as the M50, replacing the former M40i designation.
In addition to those extra-large matte black wheels, the new X3 boasts a notably large roof spoiler constructed from polyurethane. While this might seem over the top for a crossover, it can be painted to match the body color for a more integrated look. The M50 will stand as the top model in the fourth-generation X3 lineup, as BMW has no plans to introduce a full-fledged M variant. These M Performance Parts could easily mislead an uninformed observer into thinking it's the genuine M model, thanks to a plethora of enhancements. For instance, a front splitter is now available for the first time, featuring a three-part design with a glossy black finish, and carbon fiber components are used extensively, including side mirror caps, a rear diffuser, and even the fuel filler cap.
This latest X3 has a significant legacy to uphold, as the previous generation was BMW's top-selling model in 2023, with sales totaling 350,000 units. For those looking to personalize their vehicle beyond the standard options, the M Performance Parts also extend to the interior, offering items such as floor mats, stainless-steel pedals, anodized aluminum door lock pins, and a key case wrapped in Alcantara. There are no actual performance enhancements, such as modifications to the suspension or brakes. The side decals and aramid antenna do not increase the X3's speed. These M Performance Parts focus on aesthetics rather than performance, so the inline-six engine remains at 393 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, allowing the M50 to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph.
BMW plans to release the new X3 in the final quarter of the year. The starting price for the M50 is $65,275, excluding options and M Performance Parts.
