A game as wild as the wind it was played in concluded with Brentford securing their seventh win in eight unbeaten home games, breaking the spell Newcastle had held over them. The visitors, who were the last team to win here on the final day of last season, became the 25th and final Premier League opponent Brentford has beaten.
Brentford twice took and lost the lead before securing it for the third time, making the game safe in the final minute. Substitute Kevin Schade was found by Bryan Mbeumo just outside the area; his first touch took him clear of the defence, and his second sent the ball past Nick Pope.
In the first half, Brentford led twice but were quickly pegged back, holding the advantage for three minutes the first time and four minutes the second. With a biting wind and occasional rain, neither side demonstrated control, resulting in a chaotic but entertaining match. The tone was set when Sean Longstaff, returning to the Newcastle side, hit the crossbar from 20 yards in the second minute.
Errors were expected given the conditions, but only one side capitalized. Nathan Collins failed to deal with a long ball, losing it to Alexander Isak, who missed a golden chance. Ten minutes later, Harvey Barnes' pass was intercepted by Yoane Wissa, who scored from the edge of the penalty area.
Brentford took the lead in the eighth minute when Christian Nørgaard passed to Mbeumo, who scored. Three minutes later, Isak equalized with a header. In the second half, Collins calmly retook the lead for Brentford, but Newcastle's best chance to equalize came when Kieran Trippier's free-kick led to Isak's cross, but Tonali headed over.
Brentford remained more threatening, and in stoppage time, Dan Burn cleared off the line, preventing a fifth goal.
