Bridget Jones is back after nearly two and a half decades, having long been a beloved icon in British romantic comedies. Last we saw her in 2016’s 'Bridget Jones’s Baby,' Renée Zellweger’s character navigated motherhood amidst a love triangle, ultimately choosing Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy as the father of her child. Fast forward to next year’s 'Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy,' and much has evolved. Now a mother of two and a widow, Bridget faces new challenges as Mark Darcy, the character played by Firth, has passed away. This marks the first film in the series without a significant role for Firth, though his presence may still be felt.

Renée Zellweger expressed her emotional connection to the character and the series in an interview with Empire. “It’s so peculiar because of the connection to this character I’ve come to love,” she says. “I love him. I love this person that Colin plays when we get together again. And I was heartbroken. It was such a peculiar thing to be heartbroken that a fictional character is gone from your life, [but I’ve] gotten to know him since 2000. And of course, Colin, he’s an integral part of that experience, and to not share it with him... I won’t lie. I shed some tears. It’s just, I guess, like life. Part of the magic just disappears.”

Despite the tragic elements in Bridget’s new chapter, the film promises the same joy and humor that fans adore. “I love this character,” Zellweger adds. “It’s such a unique experience to have the opportunity to revisit a character, to get to know her, in a different stage of her life as she evolves and grows. I feel great warmth for her.” Zellweger also emphasizes her protective stance over the character, ensuring the quality of the project remains paramount.
