Britain will continue to monitor the possibility of imposing new sanctions on Israeli settlers in the West Bank and will take action if necessary, according to Foreign Minister David Lammy. Lammy expressed concern over actions that are exacerbating tensions.
Britain introduced sanctions against Israeli settlers in February and May of this year, citing extremist groups responsible for settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank. As the foreign minister since July, following a Labour election victory, Lammy suggested that the new government would adopt a similar stance, indicating that further sanctions could be on the horizon.
Lammy emphasized that, despite Israel's legitimate security concerns in the West Bank, the UK is deeply concerned about escalating behavior and heightened tensions. "I am unequivocally clear: if we need to act, we will act, and I am in ongoing discussions with G7 partners, particularly European partners, on this matter," Lammy stated.
While he did not announce any new sanctions today, Lammy made it clear that the situation is under constant review, and he remains profoundly concerned.
