K-Pop band BTS' member Suga is under police investigation after driving an electric scooter while intoxicated, according to local media reports. The singer, rapper, and producer was discovered alone and intoxicated on the ground after operating an e-scooter, known as an electric kickboard in South Korea, on the night of August 6. A nearby police officer found him and conducted a breathalyzer test, revealing that he was intoxicated. He was subsequently taken to Yongsan Police Station, where he was fined and his license suspended. In South Korea, electric scooters are treated similarly to cars under traffic laws.
The singer issued an apology on Weverse, a platform dedicated to fans of various Korean artists. He expressed his regret and explained that he was unaware that using an electric scooter after drinking was illegal. He recounted that he fell while attempting to park the scooter in front of his home, where the police officer found him. He acknowledged his responsibility and apologized for his negligence and wrong behavior, promising to be more cautious in the future.
Hybe, the managing agency of the artist, has not yet released a statement on the matter. Suga is currently fulfilling his military service, along with other band members, excluding Jin who recently completed his service. Military service is mandatory for all able-bodied South Korean men for 18-21 months due to threats from North Korea. Suga is serving as a social service agent due to a shoulder surgery he underwent in 2020, resulting from an injury sustained in 2012.
