Since the release of Destiny 2's latest dungeon, Vesper's Host, players have been speculating that certain perk combinations on legendary weapons are either extremely rare or practically unattainable. Bungie has recently confirmed that there is a bug affecting the random generation of legendary weapon perks and has provided further details about the bug, along with a timeline for fixes and compensation.

The ongoing issue has been humorously dubbed "WeightGate" by the community, reflecting players' suspicions of a hidden perk weighting system in Destiny 2's backend. The problem came to light after the release of Vesper's Host, when players found it nearly impossible to obtain the new VS Chill Inhibitor grenade launcher with its most desirable perk combination—Envious Arsenal and Bait and Switch.

While individual cases of not getting the perfect roll might be attributed to random chance, some players began to suspect a broader issue. Developer Newo, creator of the third-party analytics tool RaidHub for Destiny 2, developed a new tool to track perk rolls on a larger scale, revealing a clear pattern. The data indicated that certain perk combinations were significantly less likely to drop, with only seven instances of the ideal Chill Inhibitor perk combination recorded out of thousands of drops.

Bungie has now acknowledged the problem and identified the bug causing it. "While we verified that each perk is weighted equally, an issue in the perk pool's random number generation is responsible," read an update from the Destiny 2 X account. The latest update from Bungie states that a hotfix is planned for November 5 to resolve the issue. "Given that this fix involves a game-wide system, we're allowing the team extra time to thoroughly validate the necessary changes," the update explained.

Bungie is also considering rewards for players who have been affected by this bug, potentially for years without realizing, and for those who contributed to identifying and solving the mystery. "We're exploring several options to not only thank those who have done the data analysis but also to provide some weapons with perk rolls that had lower random chances than intended," Bungie stated.

For the time being, players can redeem a code provided in Bungie's post to obtain the Conquerors of Infinity emblem. The code "VHT-6A7-3MM" can be used on Bungie's website to claim the emblem. Additionally, tech-savvy fans can look forward to an in-depth analysis of the bug and how Bungie's team is addressing it.
