A bus transporting Pakistani pilgrims met with an accident in central Iran, resulting in the death of 28 passengers and injuring 23 others, as reported by state media on Wednesday.

The incident occurred late Tuesday in the central Iranian province of Yazd and was attributed to a technical malfunction in the bus's braking system, according to initial investigations by the Iranian traffic police.

Tragically, 11 women and 17 men perished in the accident. Seven of the injured are in critical condition, while six have been discharged from the hospital, according to the director general of crisis management in Yazd province, who spoke to state TV.

Pakistan's consular services in Iran have been called to Yazd province to handle the aftermath of the accident, the official added.

Currently, millions of Shi'ite Muslims are participating in the Arbaeen pilgrimage in Iraq's Karbala Governorate. This event commemorates the 40th day of mourning following the martyrdom of Imam Hussein bin Ali, a pivotal figure in Shi'ite Islam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
