The last time Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx shared the screen, they were portraying the villainous Miss Hannigan and tech billionaire-turned-adoptee Will Stacks in the 2014 remake of Annie. This film also marked the last time Diaz appeared on screen with anyone, as the Charlie's Angels star took a decade-long break from acting after its release (the two events are likely unrelated). Now, Diaz and Foxx are returning in the aptly titled Back In Action, a Netflix-bound spy comedy from writer-director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) and co-writer Brendan O'Brien (Bad Neighbours). The film is not a remake of the Looney Tunes movie as one might assume, but rather a fresh take on the spy comedy genre.
In the action-packed trailer, Diaz's character, Emily, tells her husband Matt (Foxx), "Tonight something clicked. For the first time in a really long time, I felt alive again." This newfound vitality comes from torching wrongdoers with an improvised flamethrower and taking down ne'er-do-wells. The setup cleverly introduces Foxx and Diaz as seemingly ordinary suburban parents hiding a significant secret from their children—they were elite CIA agents in their past lives. As the teaser reveals, Matt and Emily's cover is about to be blown, thrusting them back into the world of espionage as their kids discover the shocking truth about their parents' former coolness.
The trailer showcases high-speed car chases, sharp outfits, and even sharper kicks, with enough chemistry between Diaz and Foxx to power a small country. The duo finds themselves in over their heads but loving every minute of it. The film also boasts a stellar ensemble cast, including eight-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close, Andrew Scott (All Of Us Strangers and Ripley), Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights), Jamie Demetriou (Fleabag and Stath Lets Flats), McKenna Roberts (Skyscraper), and Rylan Jackson (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves).
Fans can look forward to seeing Diaz and Foxx in action, performing stunts like rolling, jumping, punching, shooting, rappelling, driving, flying, and more when Back In Action premieres on Netflix on January 17th. Kapow!
