Every great hero requires a trusted companion. As The Falcon, Sam Wilson was always the one to stand by Steve Rogers’ Captain America. Now, following the events of Avengers: Endgame and The Falcon And The Winter Soldier, Wilson has taken up the mantle of Captain America and found his own wingman. Introduced in Falcon on Disney+, Wilson’s fresh, star-spangled Cap now has Danny Ramirez’s Joaquín Torres, who dons his own high-tech flying gear to fight for justice.

The idea of two airborne heroes offers plenty of potential for spectacular cinematic moments (yes, Anthony Mackie still wears his wings). However, it also adds depth to a Marvel film that aims to blend political-thriller elements with emotional resonance. “There’s a powerful big brother/little brother connection between them,” director Julius Onah shares with Empire about the new Cap-Falcon dynamic. “This relationship will be a crucial emotional anchor for the film.”

As they prepare to confront various forms of subterfuge—including Harrison Ford’s Red-Hulk-enhanced President Ross—Sam and Joaquín will need to rely on each other. According to Onah, they are more than ready to rise to the occasion when the action heats up. “These characters are exceptional fighters,” Onah notes. “Sam has been through it all. He has some tricks up his sleeve, and throughout the film, he learns new skills that become vital tools in his arsenal, especially when facing the most daunting threats.” In essence: he’s prepared for whatever comes his way.
