A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team has arrived in Kolkata to assume control of the investigation into the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor at a state-run medical college in West Bengal's Kolkata, following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. Accompanying the CBI is a specialized medical and forensic team from Delhi. On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court mandated a CBI investigation into the sexual assault and murder of a post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor on August 9. The Court instructed the Kolkata Police to promptly transfer all related documents to the CBI. In response, doctors and medical students staged a protest at AIIMS Delhi after the Federation of All India Medical Association (FAIMA) called for a nationwide shutdown of OPD services starting Tuesday in solidarity with the victim. Concurrently, the National Medical Commission (NMC), under the guidance of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, issued a directive to all medical colleges and institutions to formulate a policy ensuring a safe work environment. The official notice stated, "Recent reports have highlighted incidents of violence against doctors in medical colleges. It is imperative for all institutions to develop a policy that guarantees a secure environment within the college and hospital premises for all staff, including faculty, medical students, and resident doctors." The policy should include robust safety measures in OPD, wards, casualty, hostels, and other open areas, ensuring well-lit corridors and monitored sensitive areas via CCTV.

Union Health Minister JP Nadda also convened with a delegation from the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Tuesday. The IMA demanded a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crime and enhanced safety measures for doctors, especially women, in their workplace. The post-graduate trainee doctor was discovered deceased in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9. The family of the victim has accused the perpetrators of rape and murder.
