Sjoeke Nüsken netted twice as Chelsea matched the record for consecutive wins at the start of a Women’s Super League season with a 4-2 victory over Brighton.
Sonia Bompastor’s team replicated Arsenal’s achievement from the 2018-19 season by winning their first nine matches, maintaining their flawless record under their manager and extending their lead over Manchester City to five points at the top of the table.
Nüsken opened the scoring in the 35th minute, and Aggie Beever-Jones doubled the lead before Jelena Cankovic reduced the deficit just before halftime. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd restored the two-goal cushion six minutes into the second half, but Brighton narrowed the gap again through Kiko Seike in the 71st minute. Nüsken secured the win with a goal in injury time.
In other matches, Manchester City also scored four in a 4-0 win against Leicester, with Khadija Shaw netting twice. Arsenal continued their strong form under interim head coach Renée Slegers with a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa, led by Alessia Russo’s two goals. Manchester United dominated Liverpool 4-0, avenging last season’s losses, while Everton struggled in a 2-1 defeat to Tottenham.
