If only she could turn back time. Cher has disclosed that actor Val Kilmer was the only celebrity who has ever ended their relationship. During her recent appearance on SiriusXM’s ‘The Howard Stern Show,’ the iconic singer delved into her past romantic encounters.
At one point, Stern inquired whether the men in her life ‘expect fabulous sex’ from her given her legendary status, to which she responded, ‘Yes, and they get it.’ She added, ‘You could tell by the reaction.’ Stern then asked, ‘Who would ever leave you?’ Cher replied, ‘Few men, few men. Look, I was madly in love with Val Kilmer and he left.’
Cher, whose real name is Cherilyn Sarkisian, dated the ‘Top Secret’ actor from 1982 to 1984. Kilmer, now 64, was 13 years Cher’s junior—a significant age difference at the time. When asked why Kilmer ended their relationship, Cher attributed it to his youth, saying, ‘Because sometimes you’re only meant to stay with someone so long.’
This isn’t the first time Cher has spoken candidly about her deep affection for Kilmer. In 2021, she revealed that they first met at her birthday party in the 1980s. ‘I met him at a birthday party my friend was having for me. She said, ‘I invited this guy and I think either you or my friend who’s an editor will like him,’ Cher recounted. ‘We became friends because we laughed at the same things constantly. He would sleep over and it was just a friendship [at first.] That took a long time. Well, I guess not really a long time.’
Cher also mentioned that the age gap ‘was a bigger deal back then.’ Elsewhere, Cher said she reached out to Kilmer after watching his 2021 documentary, ‘Val.’ ‘I said, ‘Valus Maximus, I’m sorry if I did anything to piss you off or hurt your feelings. I love you and your documentary was all things… I love the things that pissed me off, the things that made me hysterical, amazed, hurt, astonished, etc. You are brave and beyond brilliant. Ethel,’ she said, referring to their nicknames for each other.
‘He’s a true artist and Renaissance man. He was sick and it didn’t stop him. He created an extension of his art and his life. Look what he created and even the things he let you see that nobody would let you see. Even the worst things, he wanted to be in the documentary because he wanted to show you who he was,’ she added.
