Despicable Me director Chris Renaud has discussed his views on a potential live-action Minions movie, stating that he is not considering such a project, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. In a recent interview, when asked about his interest in creating a live-action Minions film, Renaud responded, "God, I hope not. That's my answer." He further explained, "If there have been discussions about it, I haven't been involved. The charm of the Minions world is its animation, which allows us to do things like trapping a minion in a vending machine or having Gru (Steve Carell) explode when attacking Vector (Jason Segel). These are ideas straight out of a classic cartoon, like Bugs Bunny."
Renaud continued, "I believe a live-action version would transform the essence of the story. Personally, it doesn't appeal to me. But, as we know, anything can happen, and this is just my personal perspective." Renaud has directed the first two Despicable Me films and returned for the fourth installment. He also produced both Minions movies, with the latest, released in July, achieving a major milestone by surpassing $5 billion in global ticket sales.
In addition, Illumination and Universal have announced plans for Minions 3, scheduled for release on June 30, 2027, to be directed by Pierre Coffin. Notably, Renaud is not alone in his disinterest in live-action adaptations; Pixar's chief creative officer, Pete Docter, also expressed his lack of enthusiasm for such projects, stating, "No, and this might bite me in the butt for saying it, but it sort of bothers me. I like making movies that are original and unique to themselves. To remake it, it's not very interesting to me personally."
