A civilian lost their life and four others were wounded due to Russian shelling in Ukraine's Sumy region near the border, according to local Ukrainian authorities on Sunday.
"Throughout the night and morning, the Russians executed 18 shelling attacks on border areas and settlements within the Sumy region, resulting in 47 explosions," the administration reported via the Telegram messaging app. They noted that nine districts in the region were targeted.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted that Russia had deployed 160 missiles, 780 guided aerial bombs, and 400 attack drones against Ukrainian cities and troops just last week. He reiterated the need for permission to utilize Western-supplied weapons for deep strikes inside Russia. "To ensure full defense and secure our cities against this aggression, more support is required for a just Ukrainian response," he stated on Telegram. Zelensky urged for "decisions on long-range strikes targeting missile launch sites in Russia, the destruction of Russian military logistics, and joint efforts to shoot down missiles and drones."
Local prosecutors disclosed that Russia had conducted a missile strike on a grain truck convoy on the main road from Sumy to Kharkiv in the Sumy region late Saturday, resulting in the death of a 23-year-old truck driver. One truck was set ablaze, and approximately 20 others sustained damage.
Separately, Ukraine's air force announced that they had neutralized eight out of the 11 Russian attack drones used overnight. "This time, the invaders focused on Ukrainian grain and the logistics of the agricultural sector, particularly in Mykolaiv and Sumy regions," the air force stated without providing further details.
The Sumy region adjoins Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces initiated a significant cross-border incursion on August 6. Ukraine also carried out drone attacks on Russian power plants and a refinery near Moscow, causing fires, according to Russian officials on Sunday. Meanwhile, Russian troops continued their advance towards the strategic hub of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine over the weekend.
