When Conan O'Brien was hosting his talk show on TBS, Clueless Gamer was a staple segment. Although O'Brien has produced fewer episodes since Conan ended, Clueless Gamer made a comeback this week with a fresh installment focusing on the director's cut of Death Stranding, a game in which O'Brien himself makes a cameo appearance.
Aaron Bleyaert rejoined O'Brien for the segment, delving deep into the lore of Hideo Kojima's game. While O'Brien occasionally glanced at the camera, silently begging for relief, he also pretended to nod off. Eventually, O'Brien took control of the game, stepping into the shoes of Sam Porter Bridges (played by Norman Reedus), and hilariously botched Sam's attempt to dispose of his mother's body. The scene was not intended to be funny, but O'Brien's antics turned it into slapstick comedy before he handed the controller back to Bleyaert.
O'Brien recounted his trip to Japan, where he was scanned for his cameo role in the game. Kojima briefly appears in the video to guide O'Brien to his in-game character, who offers players a Sea Otter Suit for swimming. Upon finding his character, O'Brien quipped, "Oh my God, I hate him and he's me."
To wrap up the segment, O'Brien humorously suggested to Kojima that he be made a more heroic figure in a future game, and Kojima invited him back to Japan for a more advanced scan. Earlier this month, Death Stranding Directors' Cut debuted on Xbox Series X|S after being a console exclusive for PS5 and PS4. The sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, recently showcased new and returning characters, including a talking and singing doll, and is set for release in 2025.
