The Colombian football federation (FCF) has placed the blame on the private security at the Copa America final for the incident that resulted in the arrest of their president, Ramon Jeserun, and his son, Ramon Jamil. However, the FCF has also issued an apology to the event organizers following the chaotic scenes at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Both Jeserun, aged 71, and his son, 43, were arrested after a confrontation at the stadium just past midnight, as per Miami police arrest reports. The charges against them included battery, stemming from a physical altercation with security personnel in a tunnel. The FCF clarified that the duo was attempting to reach the awards ceremony after Argentina's victory over Colombia in Miami, but were obstructed by heightened security protocols.
In a statement, the FCF noted that despite being properly identified with official badges, many members of the Colombian delegation were denied timely and direct access to the field by the stadium's private security staff. The statement also highlighted that tensions escalated when they were not permitted to pass. According to police reports, Jeserun's son seized a guard by the neck, pulling him to the ground and assaulting him.
The FCF further explained that Ramon Jesurun, influenced by paternal instincts, attempted to address the situation but became overwhelmed, as he was accompanied by his wife, children, and grandchildren in the corridor. The federation expressed regret over the incident and extended apologies to the tournament organizers, the host country, and those affected.
President Jesurun, on his part, deeply regrets the events, describing them as unfortunate and stemming from a protective, instinctive reaction towards his son and family. The final match was delayed by over an hour due to a police lockdown that left hundreds of fans stranded outside the Hard Rock Stadium in Florida. Numerous arrests were made and more than 50 individuals were ejected from the venue after unauthorized entry attempts by ticketless fans. Argentina ultimately secured a 1-0 victory over Colombia, though the match was marred by the pre-game disturbances.
