Have you been charged the full price despite a store advertising a reduced price? Or perhaps you received a damaged or defective item? In Dubai, consumers have the right to file a complaint with the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET). According to Federal Decree No. 5 of 2023, consumers are entitled to seek compensation for damages incurred from using goods or services. In the event of defects in the product or service, the supplier is obligated to provide repair, replacement, or a refund. Suppliers are also required to clearly display the prices of goods, refrain from deceptive advertising, and uphold warranties. Those who violate the consumer protection law are subject to fines of up to Dh2 million and a 2-year prison sentence, as per the law that came into effect in October 2023. Below are the steps to take when filing a consumer complaint in Dubai.
