BAKU: The much-awaited COP29 UN climate change conference commences on Monday in Baku, Azerbaijan, gathering global leaders, experts, and activists to address the pressing environmental issues confronting the planet.
From November 20 to 22, this year's event revolves around the theme 'In Solidarity for a Green World.' With an anticipated attendance of over 50,000, including prominent industry leaders and policymakers, COP29 is set to propel global climate initiatives. However, notable absences include EU President Ursula von der Leyen, US President Joe Biden, and Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, as reported by Reuters.
A key focus of COP29 is climate finance, with parties aiming to establish a New Collective Quantified Goal on funding. Delegates are expected to delve into discussions on reducing carbon emissions, sustainable development, and integrating climate resilience into national policies.
Azerbaijan, a major fossil fuel producer, like last year's host the UAE, is signaling a shift towards renewable energy. COP29 President-Designate Mukhtar Babayev emphasized that hosting the conference marks a transition from traditional energy sources to renewable solutions. 'This event will highlight our investments in wind, solar, and hydrogen energy projects,' he noted.
Babayev also underscored Azerbaijan's role in coordinating global efforts, aiming to provide a platform for developing nations to share their climate challenges and solutions. 'As a country that has undergone environmental and economic transformation, Azerbaijan understands the balance between development needs and climate responsibility,' he stated.
In preparation for the conference, Azerbaijan has invested in sustainable infrastructure, green public transportation, and conference facilities. Babayev added, 'We are committed to achieving a green COP by integrating renewable energy and aiming for a zero-waste policy.'
Despite the challenges, COP29 represents a pivotal moment to transform ambitions into concrete actions for future generations. 'We are ready to lead, innovate, and foster the international cooperation needed to address the climate crisis and build a more sustainable future,' Babayev concluded.
