BioWare has released a compilation package for its Mass Effect series, bundling the original trilogy. Could the studio do the same for the Dragon Age franchise? While it's not impossible, don't hold your breath. BioWare's creative director, John Epler, explained in an interview that this would be particularly challenging due to the different engines used in the Dragon Age games.
Epler told Rolling Stone that the first two Dragon Age games were developed on the Eclipse engine, while Dragon Age: Inquisition switched to Frostbite. He mentioned that he is one of only about 20 people still at BioWare with experience on the Eclipse engine, making a compilation package more difficult. In contrast, the Mass Effect trilogy was developed using the Unreal Engine, which facilitated the creation of the 2021's Mass Effect Legendary Edition.
"It's not going to be as straightforward as Mass Effect, but we do cherish the original games. Never say never; that's the bottom line," Epler said. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, released on October 31, is performing well on Steam, although neither BioWare nor EA has disclosed specific sales figures. EA CEO Andrew Wilson expressed enthusiasm during an earnings call, stating, "The team is really energized by what they've delivered. And my sense is that, yes, it has breakout potential."
GameSpot's review in progress for Dragon Age: The Veilguard gave the game a 7/10. If you're new to the game, you might find GameSpot's The Veilguard guides hub helpful.
