Courtney Cox is the sole actress to have appeared in every Scream movie since its inception in 1996. However, despite rumors that Cox had committed to Scream 7 as early as March, she has not yet officially confirmed her return as Gale Weathers for the upcoming sequel. Cox revealed to Variety that she is not officially on board yet, but she is aware that Scream 7 is in the works. She also mentioned that she has no specific timeline for making her decision but is kept informed about the script's development. 'They're rewriting all the time,' Cox said, indicating that she is not out of the loop.
Cox expressed her excitement about director Kevin Williamson, the original screenwriter of the franchise, who has been signed to helm Scream 7. 'You can't get better than that choice,' Cox noted, adding that it will be a fun project. So far, the only confirmed returnee for Scream 7 is Neve Campbell, who declined to reprise her role as Sydney Prescott in Scream 6 due to a salary dispute. Cox also mentioned her desire to see her ex-husband, David Arquette, return as Dewey Riley, despite his character's death in the fifth film. 'I understand the reasons they [killed off Dewey], but whoa! Talk about a missed character,' Cox said. 'Dewey is so loved by Scream fans. They have to figure it out.'
The initial plan for Scream 7 was to focus on Melissa Barerra and Jenna Ortega as the Carpenter sisters, Sam and Tara. However, Barerra was let go from the project due to her comments on social media about the war in Gaza, and Ortega withdrew citing scheduling conflicts with her role in Wednesday Season 2. Following these changes, Campbell and Williamson were approached to return for the next installment. As of now, Scream 7 does not have a release date.
