The 12th week of the LIV Golf League at The Old White at The Greenbrier marks a critical juncture as it prepares the ground for the culminating event of the season at LIV Golf Chicago. With only LIV Golf Chicago, scheduled from September 12th to 15th, left to play, the stakes are high for the players to solidify their rankings in the Individual Standings. The results will dictate the ultimate champion, who maintains their status, and who faces relegation into the Drop Zone. This is a decisive phase of the season where each stroke matters.
The LIV Golf Team Championship in Dallas, taking place from September 20th to 22nd, will conclude the season. This final showdown will reveal the winning team. Let's delve into the mechanics. Each of the 13 tournaments sees players, including Wild Cards, concluding with a 54-hole total score over three rounds. The top 24 players at each event accumulate points on the leaderboard, with the highest point scorer at season's end claiming the individual title. So far, it seems straightforward.
Regarding promotion and relegation in LIV Golf, the Individual Standings at season's end are divided into three Zones: Lock Zone – The top 24 players keep their LIV Golf League status. Open Zone – Players ranked 25 to 48 are at risk of being traded or dropped by their teams. Drop Zone – Players ranked 49 and below are relegated (2024 Captains are exempt). Similar to 2023, the LIV Golf Promotions event will offer a pathway to LIV Golf – with the top 4 players qualifying for LIV Golf 2025. In 2023, this event took place in December at Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
Adrian Meronk (Cleeks GC) and Anirban Lahiri (Crushers GC), both with ties to Dubai, are performing impressively in the LIV Golf League. Meronk is currently in 15th place, while Lahiri ranks 17th. Notably, Lahiri and his Crushers Team are atop the Team Standings, setting them up for a strong season finish. The Team Finals are set to be dramatic, with the top four seeded teams receiving a bye in the quarterfinals, while teams ranked 5-12 engage in head-to-head match play. Each matchup includes two singles matches and one alternate-shot match, with the highest-ranked teams selecting their opponents. The 13th-ranked team will attend the Dallas event but will not play. In the Semi-Finals, the quarterfinal winners face the top four seeds, maintaining the same format of two singles matches and one alternate shot match. The Final transitions to stroke play, where all four players from each remaining team compete, with all scores contributing to the team's total. The team with the lowest combined score claims the championship.
