BMW never produced a wagon variant of the E46-generation M3. However, this hasn't deterred enthusiasts globally from crafting their own by combining various components. This particular creation appears exceptionally well-executed, featuring an enhanced suspension system, superior brakes, and an abundance of carbon fiber. The highlight? It's available for purchase.
Currently up for auction on Bring a Trailer, originating from Laguna Hills, California, this 2001 325Xi Sport Wagon has been completely reimagined as an M3 Touring. It boasts the M3's S54 straight-six engine, which has been refurbished with new internals and a CSL-style carbon airbox, promising an exhilarating auditory experience. Accompanying this is a six-speed manual transmission and subframes sourced from an M3 donor vehicle.
Not only has the drivetrain been altered. The bumpers, side skirts, fenders, and mirrors have all been replaced to give this vehicle the authentic look of a factory M car. We're quite fond of it. The only elements hinting at its aftermarket origins are the 19-inch two-piece Forged Club wheels and the gold-painted brake calipers, borrowed from a 996-generation Porsche 911. Most of the enhancements over the standard M3 are related to the suspension. These include adjustable Bilstein PSS10 coilovers, stiffer H&R sway bars, a selection of polyurethane bushings, camber plates, and a carbon-fiber front strut brace.
Inside, you'll discover a variety of carbon fiber trim pieces, M striped seatbelts, and a pair of stylish Recaro Sportster CS seats. Given the extensive work and high-quality aftermarket enhancements invested in this custom M3 Touring, it's reasonable to expect a price tag higher than that of a typical E46. Nevertheless, considering its uniqueness and utility for the right enthusiast, the extra cost seems justified.
