Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande's close relationship has been a frequent topic of discussion. The 'Wicked' co-stars have consistently demonstrated their strong bond during the promotional tour for the musical film, and now Erivo, 37, is sharing insights into how the duo communicates through physical touch.
"I think I'm sort of used to it now," the actress mentioned in a teaser clip for her December 10 appearance on 'The Drew Barrymore Show.' She continued, "If it's not like connected, I'm like, what's wrong? What's happening? Where are you? You know what I mean?"
Erivo further elaborated on her and Grande's, 31, frequent physical interactions. "We walk hand-in-hand very often," she explained. "Like, if we're not walking hand-in-hand, we'll find each other somewhere."
Barrymore, 49, who is known for her close interactions with guests, commented on her own tendency to "hold hands, hug, snuggle" people. Erivo responded, "I think we assume that physical connection can only be romantic," noting that some people are "a bit afraid of physical connection."
Erivo and Grande have been seen holding hands during interviews for 'Wicked' in recent weeks. Erivo believes that "we don't realize that how we communicate sometimes is by physical touch." She added, "Sometimes you can't say anything and you're in a room … it's just like a squeeze of a hand and that's sometimes how she and I communicate."
Erivo emphasized, "And I think we don't give enough credit to how we communicate with our friends physically." Last month, Erivo emotionally discussed how removing the green makeup every day made her feel more comfortable in her own skin. Grande, moved by Erivo's words, clutched her co-star's hand and praised her beauty.
At the end of the clip, the reporter revealed it was her first junket. Grande responded, "Well you have been the light of the day, you have been a gift." Erivo added, "You brought such light into the room. Thank you very much for coming into this room today, we needed you to come in."
Fans commented that the video felt like "an emotional support group," while some viewers were turned off by the press tour, stating they refuse to see the movie. Rumors also surfaced about Grande being paid $15 million to star as Glinda the Good Witch, while Erivo received only $1 million to play Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West. Universal Pictures denied the alleged $14 million pay gap, stating that the reports were "completely false and based on internet fodder."
