As we approach 2025, the anticipation for James Gunn’s fresh take on the DCU is mounting. Gunn, alongside producer Peter Safran, is steering the revamped DC Studios, with a major focus on next summer’s Superman film directed by Gunn, but officially kicking off this December with the animated series Creature Commandos. Recently, Gunn revealed another animated venture for the DCU lineup—a feature film titled Dynamic Duo. This project will delve into the story of Robin, or more accurately, ‘Robins’, as Gunn phrased it on social media. The film will spotlight both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, who have each donned the Robin mantle under Batman at different points in the DCU’s continuity. Grayson, the original Robin, later became Nightwing, while Todd, the second Robin, transitioned into the villainous Red Hood.
‘Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, Dynamic Duo, the story of Robin… or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd,’ Gunn shared. Notably, Gunn elaborated on the unique animation style for Dynamic Duo, which will not adhere to typical studio standards. The film will be produced by Swaybox, a New Orleans-based creative team specializing in puppetry. Consequently, Dynamic Duo will blend ‘animation, puppetry, and CGI’, according to Gunn. The script will be penned by Matt Aldrich, known for his work on Coco and Lightyear, with Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho also contributing to the production. However, this does not imply any connection to The Batman universe, which operates independently from the DCU.
Meanwhile, the DCU slate is steadily taking shape. Following Superman, Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow is set for a 2026 release, HBO’s Lanterns series is preparing to shoot in 2025, and Peacemaker Season 2 is expected to debut next year. All eyes are on Gunn and Safran to successfully execute this ambitious DCU vision.
