A cargo truck collided with a passenger bus in northern Mexico on Saturday, resulting in at least 24 fatalities and five injuries, according to local authorities.

"As of now, the initial information indicates that 24 passengers have perished and five individuals are injured and receiving treatment," stated Rodrigo Reyes, a senior official from the government of Zacatecas state, in a video posted on social media.

The incident, which took place on a highway connecting Zacatecas with the central state of Aguascalientes, transpired when a container loaded with corn fell off the truck, causing the bus to overturn. The bus was en route from the city of Tepic in western Nayarit state to Ciudad Juarez near the US border.

The highway was temporarily closed to traffic, with Reyes noting that army, National Guard, and civil protection forces were dispatched to the scene.
