Deadpool & Wolverine has now completed its tenth week in theaters and managed to stay in the top five at the box office last weekend. However, with a digital release just around the corner, Marvel's first R-rated film is gradually concluding its theatrical run and gearing up for awards season. This includes some notably ambitious plans for the film's co-star, Hugh Jackman.
According to Variety, Marvel is strategizing to submit Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine for the Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars. Jackman will also be considered for similar accolades at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Critics Choice Awards. Meanwhile, the studio plans to nominate Ryan Reynolds for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical at the Golden Globes.
Securing an Oscar nomination for Jackman would be a significant achievement, especially since his only previous Academy Award nod was for the 2013 remake of Les Misérables. It's anticipated that Deadpool & Wolverine will have a stronger presence in the Oscars' technical categories, such as special effects, sound design, and production design. However, the Golden Globes seems to be the awards show where Marvel anticipates Deadpool & Wolverine might be recognized in non-technical categories, including Best Comedy. The film will also compete for the Golden Globes' Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, which Barbie won last year.
Deadpool & Wolverine will be available on digital platforms starting October 1, with a Blu-ray and HD release scheduled for October 22.
