The death toll in Myanmar following Typhoon Yagi has risen to 384, with 89 individuals still unaccounted for, according to the junta's latest update on Saturday.
Yagi, which traversed northern Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar over a week ago, has resulted in widespread flooding and landslides, claiming hundreds of lives across the affected regions. The United Nations has cautioned that up to 887,000 people in Myanmar alone have been impacted by the typhoon.
The UN's humanitarian agency (OCHA) reported on Saturday, as per AFP, that the most severely hit areas are still in a state of devastation, with extensive damage to residential structures, personal belongings, water sources, and electrical infrastructure.
Additionally, the agency noted that roads, bridges, communication networks, educational institutions, public service facilities, religious sites, and agricultural lands have been either severely damaged or entirely destroyed. Torrential rains have continued to batter Myanmar, exacerbating the situation in the conflict-ridden nation.
Typhoon Yagi, which made landfall in Vietnam on September 7, has not only devastated infrastructure but also triggered fatal landslides across the region. Prior to reaching Vietnam, the typhoon had already caused significant damage in southern China and the Philippines, resulting in at least 24 deaths and numerous injuries.
