Deep Rock Galactic is expanding its horizons with a roguelite spin-off titled Rogue Core, set for an early-access launch in 2025. Check out the pre-alpha gameplay teaser below.
Rogue Core retains the core structure of Deep Rock Galactic, taking place on the resource-rich yet perilous planet of Hoxxes IV. The game continues to support up to four players in co-op, with players assuming the roles of gun-wielding dwarves exploring the planet's depths. However, instead of miners, players will take on the roles of the militaristic Reclaimers, tasked with investigating abandoned deep mines near the planet's core.
These mines were once used to excavate Expenite, a rare mineral found only near Hoxxes IV's heart. Unlike its predecessor, Rogue Core doesn't start you fully equipped. Instead, you'll use Expenite to upgrade your Reclaimer's weapons and gear. If playing with friends, this system becomes a 'draft' where players select from a shared pool of options, with each choice blocking others, necessitating strategic planning with your team to optimize upgrades.
Additional enhancements can be looted from special rooms or earned by completing challenging tasks. The final game will feature five (or more) classes, with only two announced so far: the sword-wielding Slicer and the drone-handling Falconeer. Rogue Core also introduces permanent progression between runs and a spaceship hub known as the RV-09 Ramrod.
The game's environment showcases deep-sea floors with shifting stone walls, abandoned caverns filled with mining equipment, and the hostile, barren rock of the core itself. As you approach the planet's center and complete your runs, the game's biomes will increasingly reflect the core's hostility. Rogue Core introduces new and familiar enemies, including formidable boss battles.
According to a blog post and developer Q&A on Steam, Rogue Core initially began as an expansion for the base game but evolved into its own distinct entity. Developer Ghost Ship Games also wanted to release Rogue Core in early access, a move that wouldn't have been possible if it were DLC. The game is currently in pre-alpha, with plans for an early-access release in 2025.
