At the 'Contenders Los Angeles' event, Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve provided intriguing details about the growing bond between actors Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, and how their off-screen camaraderie significantly influenced the portrayal of the pivotal relationship between Paul Atreides and Chani on screen. Villeneuve emphasized that the connection between Chalamet and Zendaya was a crucial element for the film's romantic core, as reported by Deadline.

The two stars, who had a fleeting encounter in the first Dune film, developed a strong friendship during the movie's promotional tour, a relationship that continued to strengthen throughout the production of Part Two. 'They met each other briefly in Part One and naturally became friends,' Villeneuve recounted, noting that 'during the promotional tour, their relationship evolved into a deeper friendship. This was invaluable to me because Jon [Spaihts, screenwriter] and I had built the entire narrative around their relationship, from the inception of love between Paul and Chani to the challenges they face due to external pressures and political influences.'

He further explained, 'All of this hinged on the chemistry between them. I placed a significant bet on that chemistry, making it essential to capture it on screen.'
