Destin Daniel Cretton, the director behind Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is reportedly in discussions to take the helm of Spider-Man 4, as per The Hollywood Reporter. The film will feature Tom Holland in the lead role and is a collaborative effort between Sony and Marvel Studios, which is owned by Disney. This would mark Cretton's debut in the Spider-Man franchise, making him the fourth director to direct a solo Spider-Man film.
Jon Watts previously directed the three Spider-Man films starring Holland, while Marc Webb directed the two Amazing Spider-Man films featuring Andrew Garfield. Sam Raimi directed the trilogy with Tobey Maguire as the iconic superhero. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are set to return for the script, with Marvel's Kevin Feige and former Sony president Amy Pascal serving as producers.
The plot of Spider-Man 4 remains undisclosed. It is unclear whether the story will follow the aftermath of No Way Home, which left the world oblivious to the fact that Peter Parker was the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. In June 2023, Holland revealed that he and the producers had just begun discussions about a potential fourth film. "The initial sessions were centered around, 'Why should we do this again?' And I think we've found our answer," Holland added.
Destin Daniel Cretton is best recognized for his work on films such as Short Term 12, The Glass Castle, Just Mercy, and the Marvel Studios film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He was initially slated to direct the high-budget Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but stepped down last November due to changes in the project's production schedule, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
