Bungie is set to revamp Destiny 2's armor system with the introduction of Codename: Frontiers, reducing the number of stats from six to three and allowing players to boost their character stats up to double their current values. These changes, scheduled to launch in Summer 2025 alongside the Codename: Apollo expansion, were detailed in a recent developer livestream and a dedicated blog post.
The key highlight is that armor will become more specialized in Apollo. Instead of each piece of armor contributing to all six stat categories, armor will now focus on specific elements such as melee or grenade abilities. Bungie aims to make armor a more desirable reward and enhance build-crafting, ensuring players don't settle for just one set of armor.
Currently, each piece of armor distributes points across all six stat categories, which often leads to wasted points in categories players don't prioritize. The new system introduces 'stat archetypes,' where armor will primarily focus on one or two stats, with a third stat being a 'free roll.' This should result in more 'spiky' armor, beneficial for specialized builds.
Stat tiers are being eliminated, and the new system will allow stats to reach up to 200 points. The first 100 points will provide existing benefits, while points beyond 100 will unlock new abilities. For instance, grenade-focused stats could grant a second grenade charge without waiting.
Bungie is also introducing set bonuses, where wearing multiple pieces from the same set confers special benefits. For example, a Tex Machina set could enhance movement speed and weapon handling when hip-firing, with additional benefits for using Tex Machina guns.
Old Legendary armor will undergo minimal changes, but stat types will be adjusted to fit the new system. Exotic armor will also be updated, ensuring that Exotic perks remain compelling. The Exotic class items from The Final Shape will not gain additional randomness but will be updated with player-chosen stats.
As we approach the launch of Codename: Apollo in Summer 2025, players might need to prepare to part with some of their favorite gear as the new armor system takes shape.
