Destiny 2's upcoming seasonal event, the Halloween-themed Festival of the Lost, introduces new methods to acquire highly coveted rewards. The annual celebration offers a way to obtain the best piece of armor, the ability-combining Exotic class item, without needing to complete the challenging two-player Dual Destiny mission. Additionally, the event brings back Superblack, an all-black cosmetic shader that hasn't been available since the launch of the Final Shape expansion.
Bungie detailed how to obtain both rewards in their latest This Week in Destiny blog post, which also provided extensive information about the Festival of the Lost, set to launch on October 29. During the event, players can earn a special currency—candy, fitting for Halloween—that can be spent with Eva, the vendor for holiday events. With 2,500 candy and an Eerie Engram, a specific gear drop from the Festival, players can purchase an Exotic class item directly from Eva.
Currently, players must complete Dual Destiny, a two-player story mission located in the Pale Heart of the Traveler, introduced with The Final Shape. While it's one of Bungie's finest missions, some players have found it difficult or complained about its requirements. Dual Destiny cannot be completed solo and requires significant communication and teamwork, similar to Destiny 2's raids and dungeons, making matchmaking impossible. Therefore, without a reliable teammate, players cannot unlock the Exotic class item.
Purchasing the class item from Eva offers an alternative route to obtaining it without completing Dual Destiny, though there are some conditions. Players must still own The Final Shape to acquire the class item. Exotic class items feature two special perks drawn from other Exotic armor pieces, allowing players to combine abilities for unique builds. These perks are assigned randomly, and players can buy multiple class items to try for the desired combination. However, completing Dual Destiny enables players to 'attune' the class items purchased from Eva, ensuring they get the specific perks they want. Players who haven't completed the mission can still buy random Exotic class items but cannot get attuned ones.
In addition to the class items, the Festival of the Lost provides an opportunity to earn Superblack, arguably the best or most requested shader in the game. To obtain it, players must fully engage with the Festival of the Lost. The shader is the reward for completing the Ghost Writer event challenge, which involves completing 15 event challenges. These are special Triumphs part of the Festival's Event Card, likely requiring extensive participation in the event.
Shaders typically recolor weapons and armor with various colors and textures based on a theme, but Superblack stands out as the only all-black shader in the game. Originally released in the first Destiny, it wasn't available in Destiny 2 until the Into the Light event, preceding The Final Shape. Completing a series of objectives during Into the Light rewarded players with Superblack, but it disappeared when the event ended. This is the first time Superblack is available again for players.
Unlike the Exotic class item, Superblack can be obtained by free-to-play Destiny players. The Festival of the Lost itself is also free. The event doesn't seem to change much from previous years, requiring players to tackle haunted Lost Sectors to defeat bosses and earn candy while wearing Festival of the Lost-specific masks. This year, the event adds seven new masks and Arcane Embrace, a shotgun with a new special archetype that fires two shots in quick succession. More details about the Festival of the Lost can be found on Bungie's blog.
