"Dexter: Original Sin" is set to take viewers back to the beginning. The upcoming Paramount+ series delves into the formative years of the infamous fictional serial killer. Ahead of its premiere on Friday, December 13, let's revisit how Dexter's story concluded in the original series.

Michael C. Hall brought Dexter Morgan to life in the Showtime series, which ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013. Hall later reprised the role in the 2021 limited series spinoff, "Dexter: New Blood." After airing ten episodes on Showtime, the network greenlit "Dexter: Original Sin." Set in the 1990s, the prequel stars Patrick Gibson as young Dexter, exploring his transformation from a student to a vigilante killer targeting a serial killer within the Miami Metro Police Department.

The cast of "Original Sin" boasts a lineup of notable actors, including Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christina Milian, Christian Slater, Alex Shimizu, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Patrick Dempsey, and Reno Wilson. In the original series, Dexter's story ended with him living as a lumberjack after the death of his stepsister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter). However, "New Blood" hinted at Dexter's demise, leading to the creation of this new spinoff.

Hall, now 53, expressed enthusiasm for "Original Sin," stating, "The scripts they've executed are fantastic. I can't wait, like, as a fan, to watch it, and as an actor to spend time seeing real footage of things that I've sort of tried to imagine for myself when I imagine what Dexter's early days [were like]." Hall also narrates as young Dexter in the series, adding, "I think it will help inform my experience of whatever comes next in the other series, which I can only speak vaguely about at this point. It's pretty heady. It's so gratifying."

As fans prepare for the premiere, they may wonder if "Original Sin" will address Dexter's secret older brother. In the original series, Dexter discovered he had a serial killer brother, Brian (Christian Camargo), also known as the Ice Truck Killer. Christian Slater, 55, will portray Dexter's father, Harry, originally played by James Remar. Harry played a pivotal role in Dexter's life, guiding him through the police department and instilling a "code of rules" to control his murderous impulses.

The series finale of "Dexter" left many fans unsatisfied, with Dexter adopting a new identity and retreating to seclusion. Original showrunner Clyde Phillips revealed an alternative ending, envisioning Dexter on the execution table, with all his victims watching. Phillips later returned to helm "New Blood," providing a more fitting conclusion to Dexter's story.

"Dexter: Original Sin" premieres on Paramount+ on December 13, with Showtime subscribers gaining access. The series will debut on Showtime on December 15 at 10 p.m. ET.
