A significant traffic collision was captured by the Abu Dhabi Police's road cameras, triggered by a driver who was distracted and ran a red light without stopping at an intersection.
In the 31-second video clip released by the police on Friday, a black SUV is observed disregarding the traffic light as it drives through the intersection. The black SUV, appearing to be distracted, fails to notice the white SUV approaching from the opposite direction. Unable to prevent the crash, the black SUV is struck by the white SUV in the right lane. The impact is severe enough to cause the driver to lose control, spinning the vehicle twice before it comes to a stop. The front of the car is heavily damaged from the collision.
Running a red light is a grave traffic violation, punishable by a Dh1,000 fine, 12 black points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. In Abu Dhabi, drivers must pay Dh50,000 to retrieve their vehicles. Failure to settle the fine within three months could lead to the vehicle being auctioned. Authorities also noted that distracted, reckless driving incurs a Dh800 fine and 4 traffic points.
Drivers are reminded to always pay attention to traffic lights at intersections and to avoid using their phones while driving. Motorists are advised to stay focused and maintain full concentration on traffic signals to prevent accidents, which can often result in fatalities and serious injuries. A recent report indicates that most road accidents in the UAE are due to traffic violations, with deaths increasing by 3% due to drivers' 'misbehavior'.
The recent 'open data' release on road safety statistics for 2023 by the Ministry of Interior (MOI) revealed 352 road fatalities across the country in 2023.
