In a world filled with pain, there is also an abundance of love and hope, as evidenced by the efforts of Dubai-based expats who are uniting to support a community ravaged by war and conflict. On the occasion of Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights, a group of expats is organizing a fundraising event titled ‘Light a Diya with Dhyana’ at the Dhyana Dubai studio located in the Anantara Downtown Business Centre.
Namrita Vaswani, a 41-year-old yoga and meditation instructor, is the driving force behind this initiative. She shared with Khaleej Times, “We’ve long believed that Diwali is a festival symbolizing light… Given the current global turmoil, we felt that the most authentic way to celebrate this festival would be to channel its spirit towards a meaningful cause.” The event, scheduled from 7.30pm to 9pm on October 29, will invite attendees to light a diya (lamp), symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.
Participants will also have the opportunity to contribute financially to support the people of Lebanon. The event is co-hosted by Darshan Collective, founded by Palestinian-Canadian wellness mentor Nancy Zabaneh, and Dhyana Dubai, established by Regina Mazhar. Vaswani emphasizes, “Even if you choose not to contribute financially today but only through intention, that is equally welcome. The primary goal is to assist those who are currently in need.” The organizers anticipate around 50-60 in-person attendees and more joining online.
For those unable to participate fully, joining for the final 15 minutes is encouraged, during which the lighting ceremony will take place. This segment will include an intention session where attendees will send love, hope, and healing vibes to Lebanon and beyond. The event itself will be straightforward: a guided meditation and chanting session led by Vaswani, followed by a tea reception.
