DNC officials reported that over 1.6 million Americans from the key states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, who are living abroad, will be vigorously courted for their votes. These states are crucial for either Vice President Kamala Harris or former President Donald Trump to secure victory in the upcoming election. President Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election was secured by a narrow margin, winning by just 44,000 votes across Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin.
The DNC has declared its commitment to ensuring that Kamala Harris becomes the next president of the United States, emphasizing that only eight percent of Americans living overseas registered to vote in the 2020 election. With the election just three months away, the DNC recognizes that every vote, including those from overseas, is critical to winning on the margins.
A DNC official highlighted that the largest group of Americans living abroad is in Mexico, followed by significant populations in various European countries. Recently, Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, visited several key states, energizing large crowds and capitalizing on the momentum she has gained since stepping into the lead of the Democratic ticket after President Joe Biden's withdrawal.
Biden, aged 81, withdrew his candidacy and endorsed Harris following a challenging performance against Trump, which led to internal strife within the Democratic Party and concerns about his ability to defeat Trump or complete a second term. Recent polls in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania show Harris leading Trump by four percentage points each, a significant shift from earlier polls taken before Biden's exit from the race.
Nationally, Harris leads Trump by five percentage points, according to an Ipsos poll, extending her lead from a previous survey. Martha McDevitt-Pugh, chair of Democrats Abroad, praised the DNC's funding as a strong endorsement of their efforts and the significant role of overseas voters, who have often been decisive in close races, such as the one that tipped Georgia in favor of the Democrats in 2020.
