A dog that escaped from a plane, leading to the closure of two runways at France's largest airport, has been reunited with its owner after nine days on the loose, according to Air France. Authorities shut down two runways at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport on Tuesday as officials attempted to capture Amalka the dog. Since Amalka, a female, slipped out of her carrier cage on November 19 during an unloading operation, there has been an extensive search for the pet, owned by an Austrian tourist who traveled to France on Air France from Vienna.
"After several days of intense searches, we are pleased to confirm that Amalka has been found and returned to her owner," Air France stated in a message to AFP. Airport police utilized a search drone on Tuesday, necessitating the closure of the runways. They chose the early afternoon off-peak time for the operation, thereby minimizing any disruption to scheduled flights. Following the dog's escape, multiple search parties were launched, including nighttime searches with the owner present, whose hotel expenses at Charles de Gaulle were covered by Air France. Posters were distributed to alert airport staff.
The animal was ultimately found in a park in Dammartin-en-Goele, a town near the airport, as reported by Le Parisien. The newspaper shared a video of Amalka and her owner being reunited, with the pet wagging her tail happily while her owner embraced her. "Both will soon be able to continue their journey to their final destination," Air France added. Charles de Gaulle, boasting four runways, competes with Amsterdam's Schiphol for the title of the European Union's busiest airport.
