After nearly a decade-long wait, Dragon Age: The Veilguard made its debut at the end of October. While its predecessor, Dragon Age: Inquisition, is now considered a hallmark in the genre, The Veilguard has faced a more lukewarm reception from some quarters. The developers behind The Veilguard have acknowledged this reality.
"It's been ten years since the last Dragon Age game, and during that time, many fans have envisioned various iterations of what this game would be," said Dragon Age creative director John Epler in an interview with Eurogamer. "Whatever we delivered, it was never going to live up to the Dragon Age 4 that fans had imagined."
The lengthy development of The Veilguard included a phase where the sequel was reconceptualized as a live-service game before returning to its single-player roots. Despite the challenges, director Corinne Busche expressed satisfaction with the final product.
"We're pleased with the critical reception the game has received," Busche stated. "It's rare to navigate such complex development cycles and still garner positive reviews. In many ways, that path is more difficult. So yes, we're quite proud of the critical reception. Unfortunately, sales figures are not something we can discuss, but as we know from Inquisition, it took time to reach those sales milestones."
EA has confirmed that The Veilguard will not receive a DLC expansion, as BioWare is now focusing on the next Mass Effect game. However, Busche remains optimistic about the future of the Dragon Age franchise.
"There are still so many stories untold and mysteries unsolved," Busche noted. "I believe that [Dragon Age's ability to reinvent itself] remains both our greatest challenge and our greatest opportunity."
