This week, Dragon Age enthusiasts have returned to the continent of Thedas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Seasoned players might notice that certain events in the game were hinted at in earlier installments. According to former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider, this is because he outlined the series' lore years ago in a document that continues to shape the games' direction.
"The way I crafted the world was to plant plots in different parts of the world that could be part of... a single game," Gaider explained to Eurogamer. "Then there was the overarching uber-plot, which I wasn't sure we'd ever reach, but I understood how it all fit together... Much of that was in my head until we began Inquisition, and the writers grew impatient with my memory, or lack of it, so they pressed me and extracted the uber-plot from me. I'd mentioned it, hinted at it, but never fully explained how it all connected, so they pulled it out of me. We compiled it into a master lore document, the secret lore, which we had to keep hidden from most of the team."
Although Gaider departed BioWare after Dragon Age: Inquisition, there are indications in The Veilguard that his original plan is still being adhered to, at least partially. He cited the return of Fen'Harel as a significant example. However, Gaider declined to reveal his original ending for the Dragon Age lore, in case BioWare ever decides to tell that story.
"I always had this vision of where it would all end, the ultimate plot," Gaider added. "But the idea that this uber-plot was this kind of biggest, finite... That the final act you could perform in this world that would break it was there as a 'Maybe we would get to do that one day.'" Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
