DreamWorks' newest animated film, The Wild Robot, hasn't yet reached British cinemas, but it's already making waves in the U.S. with both critics and audiences. Writer-director Chris Sanders' adaptation of Peter Brown's novel about a robot stranded on an island has been a huge success, earning over $100 million at the domestic box office. This success has paved the way for more adventures featuring Lupita Nyong'o's character, Roz, and her anthropomorphic friends.
As reported by Deadline at their Contenders event in London, DreamWorks and Sanders are planning a sequel to The Wild Robot. When asked about future Wild Robot movies, Sanders confirmed, "100% yes, there are definitely plans for a second one." Although we're still awaiting the release of the first film, which follows Roz, a domestic droid, as she crash-lands on a remote island and befriends its wildlife, a sequel seems inevitable.
Fans of Brown's books know that The Wild Robot is just the first in a trilogy, which also includes The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects. These books explore the relationship between technology and nature, and our responsibilities towards the world around us. With Sanders' track record from How To Train Your Dragon, DreamWorks is in good hands for this ambitious franchise.
There's no official word yet on when the sequel might be released, which cast members from the original film will return, or what the plot might entail. However, as DreamWorks celebrates its 30th anniversary, it's thrilling to see the studio continuing to innovate with new and exciting projects. All we need now is for October 18th to arrive so we can fully immerse ourselves in the world of The Wild Robot and prepare for our next animated robot obsession!
