Two drivers in Abu Dhabi were involved in serious accidents after abruptly stopping on the road due to unforeseen hazards, as shown in a police video released on Friday.
One driver stopped upon seeing a mattress flying off a pickup truck, while the other halted after spotting steel rods lying on the highway. In both instances, the subsequent crashes could have been prevented if the drivers had simply steered clear of the hazards and continued driving.
The first accident, captured in the footage, began with a pickup truck carrying a stack of mattresses. As it traveled on the road, one mattress fell off, causing other drivers to swerve and change lanes. However, a white vehicle stopped instead of maneuvering around the mattress. A water delivery truck then collided with the car, causing the heavy vehicle to flip onto its side and narrowly miss other motorists.
In the second accident footage, steel rods are seen rolling onto the highway. Several cars drove over the rods, but a white van suddenly stopped, resulting in a car crashing into its rear door.
The Abu Dhabi Police emphasized in their post, 'Just avoid such unexpected hazards on the roads; do not stop for any reason. Avoid all distractions and focus only on driving.' Stopping in the middle of the road is a traffic offense punishable by a Dh1,000 fine and six traffic black points.
Brig Mahmoud Yousef Al Balushi, director of the Traffic and Security Patrols Directorate, advised, 'In case of car breakdowns, it is important to stay off the road and use the bays designated for emergency situations. Use the right shoulder only in cases of extreme necessity. Use the four-way warning signals and then head to the nearest exit.'
