Dubai's Court of Cassation dismissed a $100-million lawsuit against an American video game company on Monday, according to a statement, in a complex copyright dispute involving a popular game. The legal battle commenced in 2018 when the company ended its contract with a UAE-based publishing firm. Subsequently, the publisher filed a lawsuit, asserting ownership of certain game modes and seeking $100 million (Dh367 million) in compensation. The conflict led to an extensive legal tussle. On March 15, after a comprehensive review of the evidence, Dubai's appeal judges sided with the gaming company, confirming its ownership of the original game and its modes. The court mandated the publisher to compensate the American company with Dh18.7 million, reinforcing the UAE's dedication to safeguarding intellectual property rights and the rule of law.
"This verdict underscores the UAE's strong legal system and its commitment to protecting intellectual property rights. It clearly communicates to the global creative community that the UAE is a secure environment for innovation and creativity," stated the legal team representing the US-based gaming company in court.
