Emiratis now have the opportunity to secure project funding for business ideas that positively impact their communities, thanks to a new government initiative in Dubai. The Furjan Fund is dedicated to supporting social events that foster stronger connections between neighbourhoods in the vibrant emirate, with the goal of promoting social cohesion and community unity. To be considered, proposals must emphasize social benefits, present a financial strategy, showcase a capable team, and detail methods for measuring success. Interested parties must submit their ideas through the fund's website.
"The fund is designed to finance projects that improve communication among citizens within neighbourhoods, organize seasonal events, and focus on economically empowering Emiratis, promoting a healthy lifestyle, strengthening national identity, and activating groups centered around shared interests," explained Rashed Alhajeri, Director of the Al Furjan Fund. Launched in 2023 by Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and under the guidance of Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the fund is committed to supporting Emirati citizens through social projects that enhance the quality of life in Dubai's neighbourhoods.
To date, the fund has supported and launched 15 projects, including a summer camp, the Al Ferjan Padel Challenge, and the Hatta Ramadan Championship. These initiatives are all organized by Emiratis, aiming to connect and unite Dubai's neighbourhoods. In a move to promote health and community engagement, the fund partnered with Hattrick Academy and Dubai Municipality to make football training more accessible and sustainable.
Furthermore, the fund collaborated with the upcoming Expo 971 festival, which celebrates Emirati culture through educational and entertaining activities organized by the Ousha Bint Hussein Cultural Centre. These events, supported by partnerships with entities such as Al Ameen, Awqaf, Ferjan Dubai, and DP World, are part of a long-term vision to sustainably support educational and entertaining events tied to Emirati heritage.
Alhajeri described the initiative as community-focused rather than profit-driven, highlighting the importance of such initiatives: "As Dubai grows and residents are redistributed, neighbourhoods are losing their sense of connectivity." With the support of the Al Furjan Fund and in partnership with 'Thukher Club', a fully funded recreational trip was organized for senior Emiratis to strengthen bonds among club members.
The Thukher Club promotes social connection, health, and fitness among seniors, offering a gym, regular health checkups, and various activities for retirees. Two international trips were also organized in collaboration with the Al Furjan Fund, one to Sri Lanka and another to India. Alhajeri recounted the first trip, saying, "In January, I traveled with 20 retirees to Sri Lanka for a week, engaging in many enjoyable activities. The retirees were warmly hosted by local families, learning about their culture and exploring numerous tourist attractions." A doctor was assigned to ensure retirees took their medications on time, and the trip was filled with conversations and laughter, fostering lasting connections among citizens.
