A neighborhood in Dubai has made remarkable strides in waste management, achieving the lowest emissions footprint in the UAE, with a 78 percent reduction in carbon emissions compared to the national average. This accomplishment is largely due to the residents of Sustainability City, who follow a highly efficient waste management system that prioritizes recycling and composting.

In an interview with Khaleej Times, British expat Sally Maddison shared insights into how the city encourages waste reduction and promotes source separation. "Previously, I lived in Arabian Ranches, where recycling options were limited. Here in Sustainable City, each recycling bin is clearly labeled, making it easy for everyone, including children, to know where to dispose of different types of waste. We sort everything: paper, cardboard, metal, glass, and plastic." She also highlighted the impressive landscaping and the use of electric trucks for green waste collection, along with a composting service that handles organic waste efficiently.

Maddison, who previously lived in Amsterdam, emphasized that recycling and reusing are integral to daily life. "It's not difficult; it's a way of life. We have a general waste bin, but sorting has become second nature. With five different bins at home, everyone knows where things go, and it doesn't require extra effort. Even my four-year-old helps by putting paper in the cardboard bin. It feels good to contribute to a more sustainable environment." She also mentioned designated bins for electronic waste and clothing, where old items are donated to charity, and broken electronics are recycled responsibly.

Alex Morriss, another resident, follows a similar waste disposal process at home. "In our community, we have designated bins for cardboard, paper, metals, and glass. Residents sort their recyclables at home and then place them into the corresponding garbage bins throughout the city. Some households also have food disposal systems." He noted that while the community makes a good effort, there is room for improvement, especially during the summer when bins can become overfilled.

The community's waste management team actively engages residents through educational workshops and initiatives that encourage sustainable living. Marwa Nahlawi, General Manager of Diamond Developers, highlighted the community's success: "Our comprehensive environmental strategies have resulted in the lowest emissions footprint in the UAE, with a 78 percent reduction in carbon footprint compared to the national average. This approach has also fostered high community engagement, with 78 percent of residents actively participating in social and environmental initiatives." Nahlawi also emphasized the role of technology in advancing sustainability, mentioning the Living Lab program that tests and implements solutions for faster deployment in future projects.
