More than 12,000 vehicle owners have been fined by the Dubai Police since January for making unauthorised car modifications that led to excessive noise and disturbances, authorities announced on Friday.

The violations involved significant alterations to the vehicle's engine or chassis without the necessary permits. A total of 5,523 fines were issued to drivers of noisy, modified vehicles, while 6,496 fines were given to those who made unauthorised changes to car engines. Violators are required to pay fees of up to Dh10,000 to retrieve their impounded cars.

Maj-Gen Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, director of the General Department of Traffic at the Dubai Police, cautioned against equipping vehicles with technologies that enhance engine speed, as these can generate noise and pose risks to residents in residential areas. He also highlighted the penalties for reckless and careless drivers, emphasizing that the law targets those who operate vehicles in ways that jeopardize their own lives or the lives of others.

Causing noise or disturbance while driving is among the violations that can result in administrative impoundment in Dubai, according to Maj-Gen Al Mazrouei. He encouraged the public to report 'negative and dangerous behaviours' through the 'Police Eye' or 'We Are All Police' services available on the Dubai Police smart app, or by calling 901.
