Dubai Police have documented 77,227 incidents of violations and accidents involving bicycles, motorcycles, and e-scooters in 2024, marking an increase of nearly 17,000 compared to the previous year. The number of fatalities has remained constant at 18. This data was disclosed in an awareness campaign video by the law enforcement agency, which emphasized the importance of delivery riders adhering to traffic regulations. Over the past four years, 181 delivery riders have suffered severe injuries in road accidents. The primary causes of these accidents include sudden swerving, distracted driving, and overtaking from the road shoulder. Dubai Police highlighted that some delivery riders engage in violations that jeopardize their safety and that of others. Maintaining focus on the road, adhering to traffic rules, and staying within designated lanes are crucial for ensuring safety. In 2024, 26,382 bicycles, motorcycles, and e-scooters were seized for traffic violations, a significant rise from 12,209 in 2023. These modes of transport were involved in 428 accidents this year, up from 385 in 2023.
In September, the Naif Police Station confiscated nearly 3,800 e-scooters, bicycles, and e-bikes within its jurisdiction for various violations, including use in non-designated areas or on public roads. Additionally, the Al Rifa'a Police Station recently seized 1,780 scooters and bicycles in a safety campaign. Violations included improper use of scooters and bicycles in non-designated areas, posing a significant risk to riders and other road users. Dubai Police urged cyclists to strictly follow traffic rules and guidelines, stay on permitted roads and lanes, and comply with all security and safety requirements in designated areas to ensure public safety. The public was also encouraged to report negative behaviors or dangerous actions through the 'Police Eye' service on the Dubai Police app or by calling the 'We Are All Police' service at 901. As Dubai continues to enhance daily transportation security and accessibility, the emirate regularly updates infrastructure and enforces penalties for safety standard violations. Recently, a new traffic law was enacted, outlining penalties for 14 different violations, including heavier fines for jaywalking and 30-day vehicle impoundments for offenses such as using phones while driving, tailgating, and sudden deviation.
