Dubai residents can enjoy free swimming lessons this summer through a clever initiative. Every weekend from 7am to 8am, they can visit Jumeirah 1 public beach, close to La Mer South, to learn the basics of swimming. However, participants must also engage in a voluntary beach clean-up as part of the deal for their free session. This program was initiated two years ago by Bimbo Calitis, a Filipino expat and the founder and CEO of Amphibious Swim School in Jumeirah.
The free lessons last for one hour, followed by a 15-minute beach cleanup. Calitis emphasizes that there is no age limit and everyone is welcome, whether they are beginners or looking to enhance their swimming skills. He told Khaleej Times, “Participants will not only learn to swim but also become environmental stewards.” These lessons have been running since last month and will continue until September.
Calitis, a professional swimming and surfing instructor, mentioned that over 100 people participated last year, with many now serving as peer instructors. He explained, “We offer these lessons for free because we understand that swimming lessons can be costly, and not everyone can afford them. By doing this, we also ensure the beach remains clean.” He highlighted that ongoing engagement in cleanup and educational activities has long-term positive effects on the community, fostering a healthier and more aware community.
Calitis also has a personal stake in keeping the beach clean, stating, “I practically live on the beach and see litter daily. I want to protect my ‘home’ and keep it clean.” Additionally, he aims to prevent drowning incidents, having been a lifeguard and saved several lives. He teaches the first lesson to remain calm in open waters to avoid panic, which is a common cause of drowning.
Calitis promises to guide committed learners from beginners to advanced swimmers, providing floats, kickboards, safety rings, and pull buoys. Participants need to bring their own goggles, swimsuit, water, sunblock, and a determination to learn and willingness to help clean the beach. Calitis assures that beginners can learn basic freestyle swimming within a couple of weeks and can be contacted through Amphibious Swim School’s social media and website.
